Deacon Van Buren

Managed Westwood club in 1915, and presumably 1916. Managed Gridley Rice Millers in Trolley League in 1917. Took up the reins of Westwood again in 1920. In 1921, he managed Susanville, which had a
record of 19-4. A player of his, "Ginger" Greenwood was a former Trolley League player, and I believe
him to be Horace Greenwood, who played in five games in the PCL in 1911. Scouted and coached for
Vernon of the Pacific Coast League from 1923 to 1925. Signed Jimmy ChristianEddie Bryan, and others. Scouted for Mission in 1926 and 1927. Was a scout and coach for the Portland Beavers in 1930.

Although the victory is welcome to the Greys it has no bearing on the Metropolitan Baseball Association race, for the game was not played on the field of a member team, Tonight, however, the Greys go back to M.B.A. competition when they clash with the Union City Reds at Sherwood Oval, Springfield Gardens. 1941 JNLIDP 4182

Pete Hartman, manager of the Franklin Hotel B. B. C. of the Queens Alliance, deserves a hand for immediately following the suggestion that every player in the Alliance ought to be given some sort of headgear.. .all Franklin players are now using the same kind of equipment as the Giants.. .Lou Welaj, the Seton Hall infielder who was cavorting at short for the Cedarhurst Club, is now travelling with the- Chicago Cubs... his friends say that he signed a contract which will prevent him from being sent to the minors, but that sounds queer.. .Welaj is a good ball player, but not good enough to Jump from Cedarhurst right into the Chicago infield. Jamaica NY Long Island Daily Press 1941 - 2795.pdf

The worth of the protective headgear for baseball players was proven again last night when Dominick Mele, regular first baseman of the Cedarhurst Club was struck behind the ear by Walker of the Philly Stars as the home team was scoring a smashing 15-2 victory. Mele was knocked out and taken to St. Joseph's Hospital in Far Rockaway, where it was stated his condition was good but he would be held overnight for observation. But for the headgear he might have been seriously hurt. 1941-4282

Bill Anderson, Queens Baseball Alliance

One of the best pitching records in the Queens Baseball Alliance belongs to Bill Anderson of St. Albans, a member of the Jamaica Recreation Club, managed by his brother-in-law, Pooch Poulich. When he turned back the Valley Stream Nationals last week, it marked Bill's 17th victory against three defeats for the season. Ever since he has been playing Alliance ball and this is his sixth year, having Joined when he was 15 years old. Bill has averaged 20 pitching victories a season. Pitching is not Anderson's only accomplishment. He has been a big man with the stick for Pooch Paulich's club this year. He has been so consistent with hits that he plays first base or the outfield whenever he's not on the mound Just so that the Recreation team gets full use of sticking. Bill Is almost as superstitious as Maurice (Pappy) Hegarty ©f the Water Supply and that's a tall order. He carries the superstition to the nth degree because he refuses to wash his uniform only until a certain number of games have been won or when the club has been beaten two in a row. As a result, the uniform has been practically walking away by itself most of the season. Bill is also mighty particularly as to where he hangs the garments after games, placing the shirt on a hook, the panto on a chair, the spikes In a secluded corner and the other parts of the uniform in different spots and this is the pay-off • „ * he denies he's superstitious. • • •
