Huh?

What did you just say?
Oh, you said "gravy."

What, you said, "navy"?
Are you sure that's what you said?

Hey, where did you go?
Oh, you're back.

I want my nap now.
I'm going to bed.  Bye.

Poems by John

Death

Unto you your last friend
Will be death itself.

But unto you when you wake
You might find another friend.

But if not, what you have met
Is your misfortune.

Day After Day

The sun works twelve long hours.
And then he goes back home.

And Mr. Moon then will take the job over.
He works twelve long hours.

Then, when it ends, in the great collision
They will retire and sleep without an end.

Homesick

Where is my house?
Why am I here?
Where am I?

Why did I do this?
Where is my home?
How far away?

I want to know this, sometime soon.

Poetry, Etc.

John was climbing up the windshield and on top of the car.

"Look at how bold John is, Sarah."

"Daddy, I'm not bald, you're bald."

***

We were driving to the library in the late afternoon.

"Daddy, the sun is the eye of death."

***

"It looks like Christmas, Daddy."

"Why do you say that, John?"

"Because I like to."

Wants and Needs

"Dad, I need my milk now."

"John, let me give you some examples of needs. You need air, you need water, you need, food, you need a roof over your head, and you need clothes. Those are the things you need."

"Also, I need my milk now."

Hold Your Horses

John was holding a stuffed horse with wings. "This is Arabella."

"Daddy, can you put in the Bob the Builder video now?"

"Hold your horses, John. That means wait."

"I am holding my horse."

Who's That Boy in the Window?

Yesterday I had to paint the west side of the house. So I set up the ladder and let John climb up with me behind him. He climbed up several times, making believe that he was Pickles the cat rescuing a kitten from a tree. We positioned the ladder in front of the kitchen window, so that Mama could see John climbing.

After a while we came inside for a drink of water. Without my realizing it, John slipped out the front door. Next thing we knew, there was John in the window, climbing up the ladder by himself.
